   designer, engraver
   Born in Nancy, Israël Silvestre was raised in Paris by his uncle, Israël Henriet, the friend and publisher of jacques callot. Silvestre entered the engraving business and, in 1692, was named designer and engraver to the king Louis XIV. His large amount of work includes as its subject matter scenes of italy and France, which are interesting from the historical viewpoint. At the request of louis xtv, he produced engravings that are solemn or ostentatious (notably the Plaisirs de l'île enchantée, 1664). Commissioned to decorate the royal residences, Silvestre gave his work a sense of space and airiness that has the look of charming landscapes.
